January 2019 NPD: Sales decline as Kingdom Hearts leads the rankings

In the United States, gaming fans spent $ 893 million at US retailers and for full-game digital downloads in January, according to the NPD Group's industry tracking company. This represents a 19% decrease from the same period in 2018. This fall in sales is largely due to a difficult comparison, as 2018 has been a huge year for hardware and software sales. In January 2018, Monster Hunter: World, one of the industry's biggest hits, was also released.

"All spending segments showed double-digit percentage declines from January 2018," said NDP analyst Mat Piscatella. "Despite year-over-year declines, the January 2019 expenses were the second highest in January compared to the $ 917 million reached in January 2013."

Big releases like Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe helped boost these sales. But they were faced with an extremely difficult comparison with Monster Hunter: World, which finished the year 2018 as the 9th best-selling game in the United States, followed by NPD.

Here are the results from January 2019

  • Total: $ 893 million (down 19% from $ 1.101 billion in January 2018)
  • Equipment: $ 199 million (down 28% from $ 278 million)
  • PC and console software: $ 427 million (down 18% from $ 520 million)
  • Accessories and game cards: $ 267 million (down 12% from $ 303 million)

It is important to keep in mind that NPD does not include digital microtransaction and DLC sales in these numbers. So, if a game like Fortnite absorbs a lot of money, you will not see it reflected here.

Let's do the graphics of the software.

Software

NPD tracks physical sales at retailers, but also obtains digital data directly from publishers. But not all companies participate. For example, Nintendo does not share its sales with third parties and Activision Blizzard does not provide its sales on Battle.net.

These charts are sorted by sales dollar and not by number of units sold.

Overall, the software has declined, mainly because of sales on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. These consoles have seen a sharp decline in video game sales from one year to the next. Again, it is probably because Monster Hunter: World was launched in January 2018.
