Jerome Adams, the Trump administration’s surgeon general, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s relaxing masking guidelines amid an increase in coronavirus infections due to the “premature” delta variant.
“Last year Tony Fauci and I notoriously, prematurely, and wrongly advised against masks. I felt it was the best call back then, but now I regret it. I fear that the CDC has also launched an equally premature, misinterpreted, but still damaging call for masking in the face of the delta variant ”, Adams said in a series of Twitter posts Saturday.
He said the mask guidelines should relate to areas where coronavirus cases are increasing and vaccination rates are declining.
Adams made the comments a day after current CDC director Rochelle Walensky warned of an “unvaccinated pandemic” as the delta variant spreads across the country.
“We are seeing outbreaks in parts of the country that have low immunization coverage because unvaccinated people are at risk. ”
In Los Angeles County, a warrant went into effect on Saturday that requires both vaccinated and unvaccinated people to wear masks indoors.
Adams blamed the confusion on the evolution of science around the novel coronavirus, which was first reported in December 2019 in China.
“What Dr Fauci and I said was based on the science and conditions of the time, and amounted to ‘saving the medical masks (which were all that were available) for the medical staff. ‘Both conditions & science has changed, but what people have heard and remembered is that masks don’t work,’ he said in another article.
“What @CDCgov said was based on science and conditions at the time, and amounted to ‘you’re safe IF you vax it OR hide it,’” Adams said. “The conditions (increasing cases) and the science (delta variant) have changed, but what people heard and held is that the masks were no longer needed.”
He predicted that states would soon enact mask warrants like Los Angeles County that “conflict with the @CDCgov mask guidelines released a month ago.”
“The sooner the CDC said we messed up and hit the reset button, the better. Believe me, I know more than anyone, ”he said.
Adams said based on emerging data, the CDC should advise people to “vax it AND mask it” in areas where coronavirus cases and positivity rates are increasing.
“CDC was well intentioned, but the message was misinterpreted, premature and wrong. Let’s fix it, ”he said.
New infections are up 70% from the previous seven-day average to around 26,300 cases, Walensky said in a briefing Friday.
At the same time, hospital admissions jumped 36% to around 2,790 per day, while coronavirus deaths increased 26% to 211 per day.
According to the CDC, more than 160 million Americans are vaccinated, which is about 48% of the population.
In addition to this, you need to know more about it.
