Judge orders penalties for Trump-aligned lawyers who sued ‘frivolous’ election fraud

US District Judge Linda Parker of the Eastern District of Michigan said the lawyers had “engaged in contentious practices” which were “abusive and, in turn, punishable”.

“Sanctions are needed to deter the filing of future frivolous lawsuits designed primarily to spread the narrative that our electoral processes are rigged and our democratic institutions are untrustworthy,” the judge wrote in a 110-page opinion.

Parker is ordering attorneys to reimburse attorneys’ fees that city of Detroit and state of Michigan officials paid to seek the penalties. Lawyers must also take legal education courses, the judge said, and she refers her decision to the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission and “the appropriate disciplinary authority for the jurisdiction or jurisdictions to which each attorney is admitted,” for potential disciplinary action.

Powell, Wood and the lawyer representing them in the sanctions dispute did not immediately respond to CNN emails requesting comment.
