Ugandan deputies to get snipers and armored cars for safety :: Kenya

President Yoweri Museveni has approved the increase in security spending for the 456 members of the Ugandan parliament – including elite shooters and armored escort vehicles – after that. a member of the ruling party was shot dead.

Critics said the spending was wasteful and did not address the security concerns of normal citizens who feared rampant crime in a country marked by unresolved killings, kidnappings for ransom, burglaries and robberies.

In a letter to the Minister of Finance yesterday from Reuters, Museveni said the decision to strengthen security was made after a meeting with parliamentarians.

"The deputies … were targeted to be intimidated and perhaps attacked, so I decided to protect members of parliament … since they are excluded," he said. he says.

The badbadination of a ruling MP and his bodyguard on June 8 follows deadly attacks on Muslim leaders, a prosecutor and a police officer. There was no arrest in any of the cases.

Military Snipers

Museveni said lawmakers would now be accompanied by military snipers and ordered the Ministry of Finance to buy pickup trucks armored to be used as escort vehicles.

Human rights groups and the opposition accused the government of wasting funds and not curbing corruption.

In fiscal year 2018/19 (July-June), the government introduced new taxes and increased existing taxes, including a new tax on access to social media sites.

"Ordinary Ugandans are heavily taxed to deal with the waste of politicians," said Cissy Kagaba, executive director of the Uganda Anti-Corruption Coalition. "Security should be guaranteed for every Ugandan, not for a few selected people … it's pathetic and boring," she said.
