Ida Odinga, wife of ODM leader Raila Odinga, supported the gender equality bill, saying that women should no longer be used as voting instruments by politicians but rather as leaders.

"We can not just be used as voting instruments when we can be leaders, but our role should not be limited to voting, but also to being elected," she said on Wednesday.

Ida made the remarks in her office after receiving a delegation from the Association of Women Parliamentarians of Kenya (Kewopa) who is pushing for the adoption of the Gender Equality Bill.

MPs will vote on the bill sponsored by Majority Leader Aden Duale this afternoon (Wednesday). He wants at least 22 more women to be appointed to Parliament.

"I urge parliamentarians to pbad this bill, it will make a difference in the lives of Kenyans," she said.

"We have seen women who have been appointed once and then get elected because they have gained confidence and know how to present their problems," she added.

Ida added that women need to reorganize to improve their policies even at the local level.

She stated that women have been put aside and that they may face difficulties in accessing elected positions, although they are also well educated.

"If things were good, women would have something to say, but that is not the case – they ask first if you are married and who you are married to." and most of the time, women do not get married where they come from, "she said.

The renowned teacher said that a good leader could be elected anywhere, no matter where he came from.

Ida added that women needed to support each other and urged politicians to change the way they campaign.

"The elections in Kenya are very violent physically and verbally and that has to change, we see money being distributed, we want our campaigns to be grounded," she said.
