The former Malagasy presidents move to the second round, the incumbent outgoing president

The former Malagasy president and the man who overthrew him in a coup will become the next head of the island state in December, after being elected first round in the first round vote that eliminated the outgoing president.

Former president Marc Ravalomanana got 35.35% of the vote in the first round of November, behind his successor Andry Rajoelina, who got 39.23%, the Constitutional High Court said on Wednesday.

The current president, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, got 8.82%, announced the court, and will not participate in the second round, scheduled for December 19th. The court rejected his request to cancel the ballot.

Madagascar is hoping for a second peaceful election since the upheaval of 2009, when Ravalomanana was forced to resign as a result of Rajoelina-led demonstrations as part of a coup d'etat of the Union. African and other international organizations.

The court said the total turnout was 53.95% of registered voters.
