Ugandan government bans sports betting – Nairobi News

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has ordered that no new sports betting company be allowed to operate in Uganda and that existing company licenses not be renewed.

Finance Minister for Planning David Bahati revealed on Sunday that the president had given the directive, as sports betting companies have diverted young people's attention from hard work.

"President Museveni has ordered us to no longer license sports betting, gambling and money companies. The president has now led the council that regulated them …. From now on, no new company will be fired. Those who are already registered will not renew their licenses as they expire, "Bahati told a Rugarama Hill parish church in Kabale City on Sunday.

GUEST OF HONOR

He was speaking at the close of a four-day conference where he represented the president as the main guest. The conference was organized by the diocese of Kigezi.

Mr. Bahati said that church leaders who opposed sports betting can now praise the Lord because their prayers have been answered.

Finance Ministry spokesman Jim Mugunga said he was unaware of the directive but added that since this decision was communicated by a minister, he could not doubt.

"I do not know, but since this was said by a minister, quote him. This is good news, "Mugunga said.
