The Democratic Republic of Congo accused Ugandan forces of shooting down 12 Congolese fishermen last week on a lake straddling their shared border, which the Ugandan army has denied.

A Ugandan soldier was killed when country navies clashed on Lake Edward.

Oil exploration near the lake has raised issues along the border, with each party periodically accusing each other of infringing on its territory.
Obed Kambale, a spokesman for the Congolese Ministry of Fisheries, said Ugandan forces killed 12 fishermen last Friday following yesterday's naval clashes. He said Ugandan troops had arrested 92 fishermen last week.

"In the coming hours, a large government delegation composed of the relevant ministries … will be going to Kampala to start talks with the Ugandan authorities," he said.

Ugandan army spokesman Richard Karemire could not be contacted immediately, but he said over the weekend that reports that Ugandan troops have killed Congolese fishermen were not true.

Uganda is keenly interested in the borderless lawless areas of eastern Congo and fought the Congolese forces during a war from 1998 to 2003 in the region, during which millions of people died.

U.N. Investigators have since accused him of supporting rebel forces in eastern Congo – something he denies. The two countries have more recently coordinated operations against a Ugandan Islamist group active on Congolese soil.
