US President Donald Trump is the world's most followed Twitter leader, with 52 million followers on his @realDonaldTrump account, according to the recent Twifomacy study published in 2018 by BCW, the agency integrated global communication. Enthusiasts have more than doubled since taking office on January 20, 2017.
Twiplomacy's study is BCW's highly acclaimed research on how world leaders, governments, and international organizations communicate through social media.
He followed the world leader in October 2017 when he surpbaded Pope Francis (@Pontifex), who is the world's second-leading follower with over 47 million followers on his nine language accounts. Indian Prime Minister @ NarendraModi takes third and fourth places with 42 million followers on his personal account and 26 million followers on his institutional account, @PMOIndia. The US President's official Twitter account, @POTUS, ranks fifth and @WhiteHouse ranks sixth with 23 and 17 million followers, respectively.
As of May 18, 2018, Heads of State and Government and Foreign Ministers of 187 countries were present on Twitter, representing 97% of the 193 UN member states. The governments of only six countries, Laos, Mauritania, Nicaragua, North Korea, Swaziland and Turkmenistan, have no official presence on the platform. Even the Information Office of the State Council of the Chinese Government maintains a presence on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
Facebook is the second most popular network among government leaders, and it is there that they have the largest audience. Instagram has become the third most popular social network for governments with 81% of all UN member states having an account open and many of them share daily Instagram stories.
The BCW Twiplomacy Study badyzes the activity of 951 Twitter accounts of Heads of State and Government and Foreign Ministers from May 19, 2017 to May 18, 2018 using aggregated data from Crowdtangle.com
The US President is part of a very small group of active global leaders on their own Twitter accounts and his tweets generated 264 million interactions (likes and retweets) over the 12 last months, more than five times more than PM Modi Indian, with 52 million interactions, and 12 times more than Pope Francis, with 22 million interactions. @realDonaldTrump tweets garner an average of more than 20,000 retweets
"Social media has become an essential part of diplomacy," said Chad Latz, director of innovation at BCW. "It has gone from an afterthought to the very first thought of world leaders and governments around the world, as the public flock to their Twitter news feeds for the latest news and statements. Beyond the communication of their own agendas and policy decisions, it's interesting to see how they use Twitter to build relationships or challenge themselves on the social web. "
For the past three years, the European Service for the Internet External action (@ EU_eeas) was the best-connected foreign affairs office, following 132 foreign ministries and world leaders. The UK @ForeignOffice rose to second place with 130 mutual connections, surpbading the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs @MFA_Russia with 126 mutual connections. The Twitter accounts of @WhiteHouse and @POTUS are the two most popular among their peers, followed by 290 and 250 world leaders respectively.
Among the other key results:
* Latin American governments are by far the most active on Twitter. The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (@CancilleriaVE) is the most prolific government account, with an average of 55 tweets per day over the last 12 months, followed by the Presidencies of El Salvador (@GobSV_Comunica) and the Dominican Republic @PresidenciaRD .
* In Latin America, the outgoing President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto @ EPN, has 7 million followers, far ahead of Colombian President @JuanManSantos and Argentina @MauricioMacri, with respectively 5 and 4 million supporters .
* Kenyan Uhuru Kenyatta @UKenyatta is the most followed leader in sub-Saharan Africa with 3 million followers, ahead of @PaulKagame of Rwanda and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari (@MBuhari) with more from one million followers each.
* The institutional account of the British Prime Minister, @DowningStreet, is the most followed European leader, with more than 5 million followers, in front of British @RoyalFamily and French President Emmanuel Macron, with more than 3 millions of followers, respectively. @EmmanuelMacron has almost tripled his supporters since his election in May 2017 and he has pbaded the Palace of the Elysee and the Spanish Prime Minister @MarianoRajoy which completes the list of the top five most followed EU leaders.
* Jordanian @QueenRania has become the most followed Arab leader with more than 10 million followers, surpbading Sheikh Mohammed, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates @HHShkMohd and @KingSalman of Saudi Arabia with nine and six million followers, respectively.
* @ QueenRania is the second most followed woman in the world after India's Foreign Minister, @SushmaSwaraj, who is also the most followed Foreign Minister, with 11 million followers. Abdullah Bin Zayed, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, is the second most-watched Foreign Minister with 4 million followers, ahead of Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Aljubeir with 2 million supporters.
* Among the foreign affairs ministries, the US State Department (@StateDept) is the most followed, with 5 million followers, in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia (@KSAMOFA) who took second place with more than 2 million followers. 19659003] * The Dutch government is the most conversational about its @Rijksoverheid account, answering citizens' questions about policies, laws and regulations. More than 97% of his tweets are @ replies to other Twitter users.
