Donald Trump followed the world leader on Twitter, Narendra Modi takes third and fourth places

US President Donald Trump is the world's most followed Twitter leader, with 52 million followers on his @realDonaldTrump account, according to the recent Twifomacy study published in 2018 by BCW, the agency integrated global communication. Enthusiasts have more than doubled since taking office on January 20, 2017.

Twiplomacy's study is BCW's highly acclaimed research on how world leaders, governments, and international organizations communicate through social media.

As of May 18, 2018, Heads of State and Government and Foreign Ministers of 187 countries were present on Twitter, representing 97% of the 193 UN member states. The governments of only six countries, Laos, Mauritania, Nicaragua, North Korea, Swaziland and Turkmenistan, have no official presence on the platform. Even the Information Office of the State Council of the Chinese Government maintains a presence on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Facebook is the second most popular network among government leaders, and it is there that they have the largest audience. Instagram has become the third most popular social network for governments with 81% of all UN member states having an account open and many of them share daily Instagram stories.

The BCW Twiplomacy Study badyzes the activity of 951 Twitter accounts of Heads of State and Government and Foreign Ministers from May 19, 2017 to May 18, 2018 using aggregated data from Crowdtangle.com

The US President is part of a very small group of active global leaders on their own Twitter accounts and his tweets generated 264 million interactions (likes and retweets) over the 12 last months, more than five times more than PM Modi Indian, with 52 million interactions, and 12 times more than Pope Francis, with 22 million interactions. @realDonaldTrump tweets garner an average of more than 20,000 retweets

"Social media has become an essential part of diplomacy," said Chad Latz, director of innovation at BCW. "It has gone from an afterthought to the very first thought of world leaders and governments around the world, as the public flock to their Twitter news feeds for the latest news and statements. For the past three years, the European Service for the Internet External action (@ EU_eeas) was the best-connected foreign affairs office, following 132 foreign ministries and world leaders. * Latin American governments are by far the most active on Twitter. * Jordanian @QueenRania has become the most followed Arab leader with more than 10 million followers, surpbading Sheikh Mohammed, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates @HHShkMohd and @KingSalman of Saudi Arabia with nine and six million followers, respectively.

* @ QueenRania is the second most followed woman in the world after India's Foreign Minister, @SushmaSwaraj, who is also the most followed Foreign Minister, with 11 million followers.
