Huawei Kenya awarded 11 of the best students to win the first global competitive skills competition in the ICT sector in Kenya.
The competition, which invites students to test their ICT skills, attracted 4,000 applicants from 40 universities across the country. Of these, 600 were selected for training after a post-competition selection process, after which the top 100 were then coached during a training camp session before taking exams at the end of the competition. National scale.
Six winners from Jomo Kenyatta University of Technology (JKUAT), Meru University, University of Nairobi and Zetech University will participate in the regional tour organized in South Africa . Those who succeed will travel to China to compete against candidates from more than 50 countries.
Kennedy Muthaura of Zetech University won the national final championship title and was awarded a Huawei Matebook laptop.
"Huawei has demonstrated its commitment to driving digital transformation in Kenya by investing in young people by providing them with the necessary knowledge and providing them with platforms and opportunities to improve their IT skills," said Jerome Ochieng, Principal Secretary at Ministry of ICT, at the awards ceremony.
In addition to Huawei Kenya, technology companies Redington, Sybl Limited, Next Technologies, Smoothtel, Express Auto, Computech and Atlancis also offered internships to competitive candidates.
Huawei is running a number of projects focused on training young talent in the ICT field to address the labor shortage. Other initiatives include the digital literacy initiative for rural citizens benefiting from broadband for the first time, the DSL program (digital skills for life) for program leavers, the Seeds for the Future for undergraduate students, the Graduate Training Program and the support of the Digital Presidential Talent Program (PDTP).
The 2018 competition has also been launched in more than 10 African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria and Zambia.
It has attracted more than 20,000 participants this year compared with just 1,000 in 2017.
