Two thirds of women will help not only women but also Kenyans, said the woman of the politician Raila Odinga, with the aim of convincing parliamentarians to vote for.

MEPs will vote Wednesday afternoon on the adoption of the 2018 Constitutional Law of Kenya (amendment), which aims to implement the rule on the representation of men and women in parliament.

The debate on the bill, which seeks to amend Articles 97 and 98 of the Constitution to introduce special slots for the candidatures of women parliamentarians, was completed last Wednesday.

While expressing her support, Ida Odinga said, "Women have been marginalized for many years and should have the opportunity to hold leadership positions."

She added that since independence, women have not had the opportunity to compete with men on the political scene.

In most cases, she added, they were discriminated against because of their marital status and where they got married.

"It is time for women to be offered a fair chance to fight in the regions where they are married and to be elected without discrimination," she said Wednesday in her Nairobi office.

Most women in leadership positions were elected at their place of birth.

Ms. Odinga then pointed out that once appointed, women will be able to compete for positions in the future.

She has also lobbied for an issue-based policy, which she says will allow women with leadership skills to compete with their male counterparts.

"I therefore call on parliamentarians to vote for this bill, and I will be there to watch them vote," she said.

"The parliamentarians … are doing the right thing and the Kenyans will be happy."

This is the second time the bill is put to the vote.

Ms. Odinga spoke when members of the Kenya Women's Parliamentary Association paid her a courtesy call.

Among them were President Purity Ngirichi, Rosa Buyu (Women's Representative Kisumu), Beatrice Adagaca (Vihiga Women's Representative), Kabodo Kaspul MP Eve Obara, Charity Chepkony, former Nyeri Representative Priscilla Nyokabi.
