The KwaZulu-Natal police officer was charged with murder after his wife and brother-in-law were shot dead in a divorce court. He is also dead, confirmed the police.
Police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed Monday night at News24 that the policeman had died from his injuries after being admitted to the hospital after returning the gun after the shooting. .
The incident occurred Monday at the Durban Court of First Instance at approximately 11:30 am
"There was a case of divorce between the deceased and the suspect." At 11 am, the court was adjourned and just before he resumed his work around 11:30 am, it was at that time that the suspect allegedly fired shots at his ex-wife and brother, "Mbele told the media earlier.
Sources told News24 on Monday that the magistrate – who was hearing the divorce proceedings – had to return to court after the shooting to temporarily confirm the bodies' identities.
"The case was filed because the husband was not satisfied with the terms of the divorce settlement," News24 told a source who wished to remain anonymous.
"The magistrate told him (the accused) to get his lawyer. He then returned to court and fired seven or even eight shots. One of them was when he shot himself in the head. "
The couple has two children aged two and 11 years old. They are currently in Johannesburg, where their mother has lived. She had come from Johannesburg for the divorce hearing.
Her boyfriend was on the outdoor parking lot, the source said. When the boyfriend saw the police and ambulances park, he rushed into the building.
The wife and brother-in-law are between 26 and 35 years old.
"They both died on the scene, the suspect turned the gun on himself but was not dead," Mbele said earlier.
He had been admitted to a hospital in Durban.
The court was cordoned off Monday to gather evidence.
An investigation into the deaths has been opened.
