On Sunday morning, at least 23 bodies were found in Lake Victoria, where a boat capsized on Saturday afternoon.

The accident occurred in Mpatta Sub County, Mukono District, Uganda. The initial badessment was 10 and the authorities indicated that dozens of people were missing.

The bodies were transported to the morgue of Kampala City while rescue efforts continued.

"It's a sad moment. Ugandan People's Defense Forces and Police Marine Units [are continuing with the] search and rescue mission for survivors and those who perished in the boat cruise from KK beach, "said army spokesman, Brigadier Richard Karemire, in a statement.

There was no confirmed information on the number of pbadengers that were on board at the time of the incident and the reason the vessel sank.

However, reports indicated that at least 100 people had participated in a cruise.

"According to one of the survivors, more than 90 people were on board," said Asuman Mugenyi, director of Ugandan police operations.

Police said Saturday night rescued more than 40 people.

Prince David Wasajja, the brother of the Buganda king, Ronald Mutebi, singer Iryn Namubiru and the city's businessman, John Fredrick Kiyimba, better known as Freeman, were among the people saved.

The boat, on which the party animals drank, danced and listened to music, flowed near the shore of Mutima to Mukono.

Mr. Mugenyi said overload and bad weather were probably the cause of the problem.

"We expect the number of pbadengers to exceed the capacity of the boat, it was overloaded and, unfortunately, people were drunk," he said. "We believe that the mechanical condition of the boat and the weather conditions contributed to the sinking."

"A big storm hit," said a local government official, Richard Kikongo. "It can be good on dry land but in bad weather on the lake."
