President Kenyatta congratulates Buhari on his reelection

President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated his Nigerian counterpart, Muhammadu Buhari, on his re-election for a second term.

In a statement to the press, President Kenyatta described Buhari's victory as a "demonstration of confidence" by voters in his direction.

He also announced his support before Buhari's second four-year term at the helm of Africa's largest economy and most populous country.

"Kenya and Nigeria have longstanding cordial relations and close cooperation in many areas. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Your Excellency to consolidate these mutually beneficial areas of cooperation for the greater good of our two countries, "he said.

"Accept, Excellency and dear brother, my renewed badurances of close cooperation with the Republic of Kenya and the Federal Republic of Nigeria",

Buhari won by 3.9 million votes (56%), after collecting 15.2 million, against 11.3 million votes, his closest rival, the former vice president Atiku Abubakar Party popular democracy.

The participation rate, based on valid votes, was 33.2%. In the 2015 presidential election, voter turnout was 44%.

The Nigerian opposition, however, rejected the results, saying the elections were tainted with irregularities.
