Two shepherds from Wajir County, abducted a week ago by Al-Shabaab militants, were released after five days of negotiations between two clans in Somalia.
Wajir County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara confirmed their release, saying the ranchers had arrived at Khorof Kharar on Wednesday.
The shepherds were kidnapped Thursday after having resisted paying zakat (a form of Islamic offering) to the militant group.
The unknown number of activists, who accused the shepherds of grazing their animals at the Somali border, also took six camels belonging to the shepherds.
The abduction prompted Degodia-Fai elders who reside in Wajir to visit the elders of Marehan in Somalia to negotiate the release of the two abductees along the Kenyan border while they were grazing their animals. animals.
They managed to secure the release of the victims but were not allowed to return to their camels.
Kibaara said the government has tightened security in border towns, including Konton, Riba, Khorof Kharar and Qarsa. "We have deployed security personnel to the border areas to prevent a similar incident," he said.
He called on residents to stay on the lookout and always share information with security agencies to fight terrorism in the county that has been for many years the target of Shabaab militants.
The release of the shepherds comes one week after the kidnapping of an armed gang by an Italian, Mrs. Silvia Romano Constanca, volunteer with a charity, in Chakama, 60 km from the coastal town of Malindi, an area popular with tourists and Italian expatriates.
We do not know where this 23-year-old man is.
