Security strengthened as Blue Economy Conference begins at KICC

Security was strengthened when the conference on the blue economy kicked off Monday at KICC in Nairobi.

Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, said the proper staff had been badigned to the security of at least 12,000 delegates.

Police warned of possible traffic disruptions in the city over the next three days.

A special police team was in charge of security.

City Hall Way was also closed until Wednesday.

Eleven heads of state are expected at the inaugural summit of the country on the ocean economy.

Seychelles President Danny Faure, who was last week champion of the blue economy by the African Union, and Namibian Hage Geingob are among them.

Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Sbadou Nguesso (Congo), Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Somalia) and Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.

Foreign Minister CS Monica Juma said more than 11,000 delegates had already confirmed their participation, exceeding the previous target of 6,000 delegates.

Canada and Japan will co-host the event with Kenya, each contributing 300 million shillings.

More than 50 ministers confirmed their presence at this three-day event.
