VIEJO MISSION, CA – A man from Aliso Viejo died in hospital after being found unconscious in the water off Laguna Beach on Saturday, officials said.

The Orange County Coroner's Office reported that Brian Riggs, 52, of Aliso Viejo was pronounced dead at 11:39 am at the Mission Vie Regional Mission Hospital.

Riggs was found around 10:45 in heavy surf at 10th Street Beach, just south of 1000 Steps Beach, said Captain Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Department

. The victim may have been diving, said Concialdi. "The rescuers managed to swim towards him, in the waves and bring him to the sand."

Rescuers immediately did CPR, and at one point, the man was in a state of complete cardiac arrest. He was taken by helicopter to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

"The OCFA recommends at any time to be with someone in the water," said Mr. Concialdi. "You can not underestimate the power of the sea. Know your abilities and your limits and consider the advice of the rescuers, never swim alone."
