Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko urged the organizers of the World Conference on the Blue Sustainable Economy to consider Nairobi as their international headquarters.
Speaking Sunday evening at the delegates' dinner at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC), Sonko said Nairobi was a modern city boasting one of the best infrastructure in the East African region. and central, which made it a commercial center.
"Due to the presence of many research centers, Nairobi continues to be an innovative regional think tank and would play a catalytic role in creating a partnership role in creating a seat for a sustainable blue economy. Said Sonko.
The governor said the capital, which is a gateway to many parts of the world, is proud to host a number of United Nations programs, such as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP ).
In his speech, Sonko told delegates that the strategic location of the city made it an ideal location for the headquarters of the blue economy.
"Nairobi occupies a strategic position and as such has played a key role in maintaining peace in the region and the infrastructure exists for Nairobi to offer a global partnership that transcends geographical and political boundaries", said the county chief.
"I challenge the organizers of the sustainable blue economy to seriously consider making Nairobi its international seat."
He said Nairobi was Africa's third innovative city among the world's most renowned cities for innovation, quality of life and ability to reinvent itself.
The governor noted that the blue economy is an emerging concept that encourages better management of the country's natural resources.
"Kenya has large watersheds like Mount Kenya, Mount Elgon, Aberdares and the Mau Forest Complex. Indeed, the climate is favorable, "he said.
Secretary of the Foreign Office Monica Juma echoed her sentiments. She said Nairobi was a big city that had undergone many transformations lately.
"There is a lot going on in our country, let's go, both residents and foreigners are investing in our big city of Nairobi," she said.
The representative of Nairobi, Esther Pbadaris, welcomed this global event and said she was happy that the city was chosen to host the conference.
"This is a great achievement for the Nairobians. There is a lot going on in our city. Let us explore the opportunities that lie ahead and continue to develop our county. For foreign investors, you have to look around because there are many opportunities you can invest in, "she said.
Maimunah Mohammed Shariff (UN Habitat Executive Director) and Ms. Hanna S. Tetteh (Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi) were also among the guests.
More than 10,000 international delegates attend the first global conference on the sustainable blue economy, which kicked off Monday at KICC in Nairobi.
The three-day conference is organized by Kenya, Canada and Japan.
