The US embbady in Kinshasa will be closed to the public for a fourth day after "credible and accurate information" about a possible terrorist threat a month before the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a statement posted on its website, the embbady urged "US citizens in Kinshasa and across the DRC to maintain a high level of vigilance".

"The US embbady in Kinshasa will remain closed to the public on Thursday, November 29" due to "credible and accurate information on a possible terrorist threat" targeting "US facilities in Kinshasa," the statement added.

Monday, after the first closure of the embbady and the warning of US nationals to remain unobtrusive, the Congolese authorities have described his reaction as "useless psychosis".

After two years of setbacks, broken promises and delays, the DRC launched last week the campaign for crucial elections that could mitigate – even worsen – the crisis that has lasted for several decades.

On December 23, voters will choose a successor to outgoing President Joseph Kabila, who has remained constitutionally in power as interim leader even though his second and last elected term ended nearly two years ago.

The vote is on the political future of a mineral-rich country that has never experienced a peaceful transition of power since Belgium's independence in 1960.

The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is ravaged by decades of bloodshed and interethnic violence, as well as a deadly epidemic of Ebola, testing an important mission of maintaining the United Nations peace deployed in the country.

The United States has called on the African nation to seize its "historic opportunity" to hold "credible elections" that can alleviate its humanitarian problems and enhance stability.
