The second round comes after neither of the two candidates has obtained the 50% of votes required to win the first round on November 7th, Rajoelina getting 39.23% and Ravalomanana 35.35%, according to the results. published by the Constitutional Court.

The final vote is scheduled for December 19th.

This is the first time that fierce rivals face each other at the polls.

Ravalomanana, 68, and Rajoelina, 44, were banned in the last elections in 2013 under pressure from the international community to avoid the recurrence of deadly political violence that devastated the island. in 2009.

Ravalomanana ruled from 2002 to 2009 until his ouster during an army-backed state coup that installed Rajoelina, who was in power until 2014.

Rajoelina's successor and outgoing country president, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, was eliminated from the race after a distant third place with only 8.82% of the vote cast in November.
