The United Nations is running out of money and urged member states to pay what they owe to the intergovernmental organization, according to reports.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent a letter to the 193 member states "The UN core budget has never been so difficult at the beginning of the calendar year" with a deficit of $ 139 million
"An organization like ours should not have to deal with several bankruptcies. But surely, the greatest suffering is felt by those we serve when we can not, for want of modest funds, answer their call for help, "writes Guterres in letters seen by Reuters on Thursday [19659004 force in Gaza
According to the United Nations, nearly two-thirds – 112 out of 193 – of its member states have so far paid their share of the basic budget.
The United States, which is responsible for 22% of the budget, traditionally pays later because of its budget.
The United Nations General Assembly Budget Committee approved a base budget of $ 5.4 billion for 2018-2019 in December
US Ambbadador Nikki Haley said it represented a $ 285-million reduction from 2016-17, with peacekeeping separately.
Last July, 116 countries had paid, up from 98 in 2016. China, France, Russia and Great Britain – the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and the United States – are all paid for 2018.
According to the rules of the UN, countries in arrears of an amount equal to or greater than the previous two years may lose their vote unless the country can demonstrate its inability to pay.
Currently, Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe and Somalia are late, but have been allowed to vote, while only Libya – which is considered by some as a failing state – is unable to vote.
million. Guterres told staff that he was concerned about a more general trend: "We are running out of money the red is longer."
He said that the UN would take steps to reduce spending by focusing on non-personal costs as a result of US pressure to reduce costs and increase efficiency
