Two Nigerians killed by elephants in the Yankari Reserve

Two Nigerians were killed by elephants near the village of Bajama, the management of Yankari Game Reserve, Bauchi confirmed.

According to a statement from the sole administrator of Yankari Game Reserve, Habu Mamman, the incident, when a herd of elephants came out of the reserve by Sharam early in the morning and headed to the village of Bajama.

The statement said, "The elephants went to the Gwartanbali Forest and the villagers were excited, came in large numbers the elephants in a circle, taking pictures and trying to touch them.

"The tragedy struck when the elephants were laden and scattered the crowd and the villagers ran for safety.But as a result, they overthrew a nine-year-old boy named Fa izu Chiroma Musa who had was trampled by one of the elephants and died there around 10 am

"The elephants went further into the forest and the spectators followed them; unfortunately, another 45 year old man, Malam Haruna Abubakar, while he was trying to get a close-up picture of the elephants was hit by one of the elephants and he died on the scene around 4 pm

"It took a few guards hours to control the crowd that kept following the elephants before they could drive the elephants back into the reserve.

" Normally, rangers are able to quickly intervene and hunt the elephants in the reserve when they go out, but this case was difficult because the villagers were very excited and wanted to go near and touch the elephants. They said it was the first time that they saw and came into contact with elephants.

"We visited the two families of the deceased and they said that they were unaware that elephants could be dangerous and recognized that it was their fault, the animals."
