The Ugandan army is investigating the circumstances in which one of his soldiers deployed in Mogadishu, Somalia, shot down his administrative officer before killing himself.

A source in Mogadishu told the Daily Monitor that the soldier who ran amok was upset by the supervisor and that four soldiers in total died in the Saturday shooting incident.

The Ugandan People's Defense Force (UPDF) spokesman Richard Karemire, however, said that only two soldiers were killed and that the investigators used to determine the motive of the lost soldier.

"The reason is not yet known. We want to know if he was crazy or not, "Karemire's brigade said by phone Sunday.

The incident occurred at the main base, which is the central nerve of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), to which Uganda was the first and, to date, the largest contributor to the troops.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been unveiled.

Gunfights among UPDF soldiers are rare on missions outside the country or at home.

In recent times, most shootings by soldiers have targeted civilians, with a number of them being attributed to unfortunate incidents and property wrangling.

However, in 2016, Sgt Isaac Obua shot dead seven of his colleagues inside the Makindye Military Police barracks in Kampala.

Private Isaac Newton Okello was found guilty in December 2018 of killing a pregnant woman, her husband and son in Alebtong District, and sentenced to 80 years imprisonment.

In 2013, Sgt Robert Okiror, attached to the 7th Kisoro District Battalion, shot and killed his girlfriend and domestic helper following a domestic brawl. The same year, Private Patrick Odoch killed 11 people near the UDPDF headquarters in Bombo for similar reasons. Private Odoch was later sentenced to 90 years in prison.

In December 2012, Cpl Herbert Rwakihembo, attached to the military police, shot and killed his fiancée, Irene Namuyaba, and two others in Luzira.
