UNESCO Adds 19 New World Heritage Sites

The World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Agency for Culture recently met in Bahrain to agree on the benchmarks that should be protected by international treaties .

In addition to the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Valley in Mexico, newcomers include the German Naumburg Cathedral, Fanjingshan in China, and the Turkish Gobekli Tepe, also known as Potbelly Hill. The latter has recently reopened to visitors after construction on its roof, according to ABC News.

Originally built in the 13th century, Naumburg Cathedral and the surrounding medieval buildings are already well established on tourists' radar, attracting about 1.6 million visitors

New sites join a group prestigious that already includes iconic sites such as the Galapagos Islands and the Pyramids of Egypt

Of the 20 new additions, 13 were selected for their importance. Three have been chosen for their natural heritage, three more have been added as mixed heritage sites and significant modifications have been made to the Bikin River Valley in Russia

The complete list includes the following sites: ancient city of Oman Qalhat; the caliphate town of Medina Azahara in Spain; hidden Christian sites in the Nagasaki region of Japan; the industrial city of Ivrea in Italy; Sansa Buddhist Mountain Monasteries of Korea; The archaeological site of Thimlich Ohinga in Kenya; the Sbadanian landscape of the Fars region of Iran; the Hedeby and Danevirke archaeological frontier complex in Germany; The oasis of Al-Ahsa in Saudi Arabia; The Inuit hunting ground Aasivissuit-Nipisat of Greenland; Victorian Gothic and Art Deco sets in Mumbai; Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains in South Africa; The volcanoes of the Chaine des Puys in France and the Limagne fault; Chiribiquete National Park in the Colombian Amazon and Pimachiowin Aki of Canada
