VATICAN CITY: A hate crime targeting Jews around the world is underway, urging the Franciscan pope to eliminate anti-Semitism.
The pope said at a meeting with Jewish leaders who attended the "World Jewish Congress on the Mountain" in Vatican City on Wednesday, May 5th. Mountain Jews are the descendants of Jewish settlers who left the old Persian provinces and settled in the Caucasus.
"We have the responsibility to try to ban anti-Semitism in the human community," said the pope.
"Unfortunately, anti-Semitism exists in our time," said the pope. "Christians can not be anti-Semites, we share the same roots".
The pope also urged the Nazis to remember the Holocaust, which killed six million Jews during the Second World War. "Without a living memory of history, there is no future," he added. "If the darkest pages of history do not teach the same mistakes, human dignity will become a dead letter".
