[로이슈 임한희 기자] Smoking is known to have a detrimental effect on the musculoskeletal system. However, the effects of smoking on the results of ankle ligament surgery have not been studied. According to Professor Hyeong Keun, an orthopedic surgeon at Jung Kook University Hospital, on September 9, the study badyzed the effects of smoking on the clinical and radiological outcomes of lateral ligament reconstruction of the ankle using tendon allografts.

Patients undergoing anatomic reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament and the calcaneofibular ligament using semi-tendon tendon allografts and bio-tenodesis screws with chronic ligament instability. ankle. This study was conducted on 70 of 105 ankles. Of these, 23 were smokers and 47 were non-smokers.

VAS pain score, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Ankle-foot back score, Karlsson-Peterson score and complications were confirmed during the follow-up visit. Anterior translation and inclination angle of the talus on radiographic stress views were also evaluated.

The average follow-up period was 21.8 months (range 12 to 68 months). There was no difference in age, bad, body mbad index or duration of preoperative symptoms. The average pain score at preoperative EVA was 5.8 for non-smokers and 5.3 for smokers.

VAS postoperative pain scores improved to 1.4 in both groups. Clinical and radiological measurements showed no significant change after the operation. However, in the non-smoking group, the complication of the wound was 2 cases, the delayed healing was 1 case and the superficial necrosis was 1. In the smoking group, the complication was 5 cases, the healing time of 2 cases, superficial infection of 2 cases
