The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that any attempt to seriously harm the Iranian economy through sanctions would fail.

According to the Iranian official Khamenei news agency, in Tehran, the United States will try to dissuade the Iranian economy by leaning on sanctions, but "the result will allow Iran to become more autonomous ".

"We used to import everything in the past, but now we produce these things ourselves," Khamenei said, adding that he was willing to face the resumption of US sanctions.

The statement comes a day after the US announced the resumption of full sanctions against Iran on May 5.

The White House said in a statement released Tuesday that the sanctions would be the most powerful and unprecedented measure aimed at the Iranian sectors of energy, shipping, shipbuilding and finance.
