The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has announced it will reinstate the indoor mask’s mandate “regardless of vaccination status” due to a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
LA County health officials said the new rule would take effect on July 17 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
The exceptions applied will be similar to those before the mask’s mandate was lifted on June 15. Two weeks after announcing that vaccinated people were no longer required to wear masks, the health service “strongly recommended” that everyone continue to wear masks indoors in public places as a precautionary measure at more and more transmissible light from the Delta variant.
The number of cases and hospitalizations has increased in LA County over the past week. As of Wednesday, 1,315 new cases of COVID-19 were reported, nearly 10 times more than the 135 cases reported exactly one month earlier. Dr Sam Torbati, medical director of the Cedars-Sinai emergency department, warned that this trend could worsen.
“Suddenly, over the past two weeks, we’ve seen a seven-fold increase in the number of people coming to emergency rooms with COVID-related issues,” Torbati said, according to a report from KABC-TV Los Angeles. “Right now, we are seeing more young people infected because they are more active and proportionately less vaccinated. They don’t wear face masks. They are not protected, so they will be infected.
Torbati added that “the vast majority of hospital patients are not vaccinated” at county-run hospitals.
“We have to take care of each other,” Torbati said. “Be aware of everyone’s health and do all we can to be part of everyone’s solutions,” KABC-TV reported.
