LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – The La Crosse County Health Department said Friday it was “strongly” encouraging residents to resume wearing masks indoors, including those previously vaccinated.
The recommendation comes as the county sees an increase in COVID-19 cases. Health Department figures show that the 7-day case rate in the county on July 28 was 50 cases / 100,000 people / week, which they say is more than a 4.2-fold increase / 100,000 inhabitants / week on July 1.
The county said the increase is likely caused by the delta variant.
“COVID-19 is still very present in our community and we are seeing a worrying increase in cases,” said Audra Martine, director of the La Crosse County health department. “We therefore strongly recommend that anyone over the age of 2 wear a mask in indoor public spaces and at indoor private gatherings.”
Health department data shows that La Crosse County has a “high” level of community transmission. As part of the CDC’s new recommendations, areas with high or substantial transmission levels should revert to indoor masking for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
The health department has urged people to get vaccinated because COVID-19 vaccines offer good protection against the delta variant. They cite the possibility of “breakthrough” infections among people already vaccinated, although a vaccinated person is much less likely to become seriously ill if they contract COVID-19.
