Lexington Reports Largest Single-Day Increase in COVID-19 Cases in Months; county back in red zone

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reported 105 new cases of COVID-19 in its update on Thursday, July 29.

This is the highest number of single-day reported cases in the city since mid-February.

The city’s 7-day moving average reaches 82 new cases per day. As of July 1, the daily average was seven cases. Lexington has now recorded 36,772 cases and 326 deaths since the outbreak began in March 2020.

Fayette County is also back in the state’s COVID-19 red zone designation. The state map shows the county now has an average of 25.3 daily cases per 100,000 population.

The health department has indicated how people can help prevent a virus outbreak.

• Get a free COVID-19 vaccine.
• Avoid close contact with sick people, especially those with symptoms of COVID-19.
• Cover coughs and sneezes.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
• Wear a face cover when in crowded public places.
