Albany County Director Daniel P. McCoy provided the latest report on the county’s progress on vaccination and controlling the spread of the coronavirus. Yesterday, 71.9% of all residents of Albany County received at least the first dose of the vaccine and 66% were fully immunized. The first-dose vaccination rate for the county’s population aged 18 and over has now reached 83%. County Director McCoy announced that the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Albany County is now 29,579 so far, with 83 new positive cases identified as of yesterday. The county’s five-day average of new daily positive cases has now fallen to 87.6. Please note that our overall case count will fluctuate as CommCare cases are transferred in and out of the county. Albany County’s most recent seven-day positive rate percentage average is now 3.6% and the capital region average has remained at 3.6%.
Of the new daily COVID cases identified in the county, 20 had close contact with positive cases, 58 had no clear sources of infection at that time, and five are healthcare workers or residents collective living environments. There are now 515 active cases in the county, up from 544 yesterday. The number of people in mandatory quarantine has increased from 865 to 857. So far, 92,637 people have completed quarantine so far. Of those who completed quarantine, 29,064 of them tested positive and recovered – an increase of 107 more recoveries.
County Director McCoy reported that there have been six new hospitalizations since yesterday, and that there are now a total of 37 county residents currently hospitalized with the coronavirus. Nine of those hospitalized patients remain in intensive care, a decrease of two from yesterday. Sadly, there is one new COVID death to report – an individual in their 40s. The death toll in Albany County now stands at 410 since the outbreak began.
“Since the beginning of September, I have reported that several young residents of Albany County have died from COVID-19 who are in their 30s, 40s and 50s. To those people who keep saying that COVID only takes our older citizens, you’d be wrong, ”County Director McCoy said. “It is a difficult time to lose a loved one of any age and my prayers go out to the last grieving family. Three other residents of Albany County have died this week and it is essential that everyone is vaccinated and that we continue to wear masks indoors, socially, wash our hands frequently and cough into our arms / elbows to better protect the community. ”
Anyone eligible to receive a booster dose of the COVID vaccine and wishing to receive one from the Albany County Department of Health will need to provide their vaccination card or Excelsior Pass Plus in order to display the type of formula, number batch and date of inoculation. . Albany County continues to deliver vaccines to housebound residents, including the elderly, people with disabilities, those without child care and those with other accessibility issues. Anyone wishing to make an appointment for a vaccine should call (518) 447-7198.
Residents can also receive free Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekly at the Albany County Department of Health, 175 Green Street. The population of 12+ is currently eligible. No appointment is necessary and walk-ins are welcome. 12 to 15 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A follow-up clinic for the second dose will be scheduled at the time of the first dose appointment. Free transportation is available to anyone age 60 or older (and a caregiver), by calling the county’s Department for Aging in advance at (518) 447-7198.
