Doctors at overwhelming London hospitals say they must choose who receives life-saving intensive care as a new, highly contagious strain of the coronavirus ravages the UK.
“Unfortunately, some hospitals are now forced to follow. . . emergency triage of all patients requiring intensive care, ”Dr Katharina Hauck of Imperial College London told the Daily Mail.
“Effective application of these guidelines means that patients under 65 who are not frail will be given priority over elderly and frail patients for intensive care. The fragile patients would be taken care of in general wards with less intensive care. “
More than 7,000 patients are currently hospitalized in London, according to The Sun. The number of people on ventilators has almost doubled since Christmas.
The outbreak is being fueled by a new variant of the coronavirus which emerged in the UK in September and is believed to be 70% more transmissible than previous strains of the disease.
