LORDSTOWN – Because of a “a significant increase” Regarding the number of students with positive COVID-19 cases and the number of close contacts quarantined over the past week, the Lordstown School District is now requiring masks for all students and staff at inside buildings.
School superintendent Greg Bonamase said masks became mandatory on Monday after hearing from board members and parents concerned about the number of out-of-school students.
“This week we have seen more cases than most of the last year. We had over 50 students who had to be quarantined, which was too much. I recommended to the board of directors to make the masks mandatory. We want students to be able to go to school and be safe ”, said Bonamase.
He said the number of sick or quarantined students or staff will be monitored. Bonamase said if the numbers don’t change, the district will look at blended and / or distance learning.
“We don’t want to have to switch to distance learning, but we have to see how the numbers are. Our goal is to have as much normality during this madness », he said.
Bonamase said he didn’t want students to miss activities such as the reunion and a Sadie Hawkins dance that will take place in October.
He said that as long as the students are masked and have no symptoms, they don’t have to self-quarantine and miss school. Bonamase said he had received a lot of support from parents for his decision on the masks.
“I understand that there are people on both sides of this issue. We will continue to do what is best for the safety of students. Our goal is to continue to keep students in school, in person, five days a week ”, said Bonamase.
In other cases, the district has completed improvements to the track.
Bonamase said the work of Astro Turf Corp. included repairing all drains around the runway, resurfacing and providing a topcoat on the runway and over drains for protection, and repairing any other areas.
“When the track was installed four years ago, the topcoat was not put on the track at that time. At the time, a top coat was optional. he said.
Bonamase said Astro Turf told school officials that a topcoat provides protection.
“Doing this will provide four to five more years off the track and help keep it going,” he said.
