ChinaSat-18 telecommunication satellite (Zhongxing-18) suffered a technical malfunction immediately after its launch, SpaceNews announced on Thursday.
The satellite was launched on August 19 from the Xichang Space Center aboard a Long March 3B rocket. This is the first satellite based on an improved version of the Chinese satellite platform DFH-4.
The ChinaSat-18 reportedly failed to deploy solar panels, but this information has not been confirmed by the owner of China Satcom satellite.
According to the publication, the satellite is insured for $ 250 million. China Satcom has not yet filed a complaint.
ChinaSat-18 would be a civilian telecommunications satellite designed to provide broadcasting and communication services to China. ChinaSat-18 would be equipped with a high-end hardware to provide a range of broadcast, communication and Internet applications over a lifetime of 15 years or more.
Xinhua news agency reported earlier that the satellite had experienced anomalies and space engineers are currently studying the cause.
