In a press release, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports that Oakland County has 21 known cases of measles. Affected people are between 11 and 63 years old.

The measles epidemic in Michigan dates back to March 13, when the Ministry of Health announced that the first case was that of a person "coming from Israel as a result of a stay in New York."

Measles is described as a vaccine-preventable disease that is spread through human contact and air by an infected person. The virus can live up to two hours in the air where the infected person coughs or sneezes, and symptoms usually appear a week or two after exposure.

Major symptoms to watch for include high fever, coughing, runny nose, red and watery eyes, tiny white spots in the mouth and a red rash on the face that spreads to the extremities.

The Michigan Department of Health notes that between 2001 and 2012, there were approximately 60 cases of measles on average each year in the United States. In 2019, 314 cases were reported in 15 states.

Last year, Michigan had 19 known cases of measles, the highest number of cases reported since 1994. We had already exceeded the number of cases in 2019 in southeastern Michigan, and the Department of Health said that "the majority of people who had measles were not vaccinated".

"The first of two doses of routine childhood measles vaccine is given at the age of 12 months," the Ministry of Health writes.

"A second dose of vaccine is given before the start of kindergarten. For international travel, infants under 6 months old should be vaccinated against measles. The measles vaccine, or any other acceptable document on immunity against measles, is recommended to all persons traveling abroad. "

The Oakland County Health Division offers vaccines in its offices from 8:30 am to 6 pm on Mondays and from 8:30 am to 5 pm in Southfield and Pontiac. It will also offer vaccinations from March 27th to March 29th from 10am to 2pm at the Young Israel of Oak Park, 15140 W. 10 Mile Road.

The County of Wayne Health Department offers walk-in vaccinations at its 33030 Van Born Road site. For more information, call 734-727-7101.

Rite Aid also states that it offers measles immunizations at its premises, upon request. According to a press release from the company, no appointments are necessary. To find a place near you, click here.
