After two cases of meningococcal infection on the campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick in February, state officials and schools have declared a virus outbreak on campus and urge the students to get vaccinated.

Two students from the New Brunswick campus with no link between them were infected with the disease – one on February 3 and the other on February 19 – and have since recovered.

Health officials can not predict whether there will be more cases on campus, but "having two short-term cases with genetically related organisms suggests that there is an outbreak associated with Rutgers University's New Brunswick, "reads in the state. Ministry of Health website.

Mandatory vaccination for students on campus protects against types A, C, W and Y of the bacteria – but not against B, who is the type involved in this outbreak, said a university statement.

Meningococcal disease is a rare infection that can be fatal if not treated immediately, according to the Rutgers Health Web site. The first symptoms resemble those of the flu and include high fever, severe headache and stiff neck.

Students can get the meningitis B vaccine at student health centers, on-campus clinics, local health care providers or pharmacies, the university press release said.
