A member of one of Mexico's wealthiest families has been arrested for alleged murder after the death of his 11-year-old son on a boat trip in San Francisco Bay, police said Monday.
Javier A. Burillo, 57, was arrested Sunday in his multi-million dollar home in Belvedere locality by the bay, suspected of manslaughter at the wheel of a ship, of intentional injury or injury inflicted on a child, and operating a boat under the influence, Tiburon police chief Michael Cronin said.
Burillo was driving the boat with his two sons aged 11 and 27 on Sunday. The two boys fell off the boat in the open waters near Angel Island, north of San Francisco, Cronin said. Investigators believe the boys were thrown into the sea when the boat struck a wave, said Cronin, who declined to discuss any other details at a press conference Monday.
He added that Burillo helped bring the two men back on board and took them to the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, where the 11-year-old boy was pronounced dead. Cronin said that Burillo was also the one who called the authorities around 7 pm Sunday.
Property records indicate that Burillo's full name is Javier Burillo Azcarraga, a wealthy real estate developer known for his lavish hotels and restaurants throughout Mexico. Cronin refused to discuss Burillo's ties with the Azcarraga family, behind Grupo Televisa, a media empire that produces Spanish-language television shows seen throughout Latin America and dominates news coverage in Mexico.
"I know him as Javier Burillo," said Cronin, adding that the developer was a known and valued member of the Tiburon-Belvedere community. Cronin would not confirm his full name.
Burillo's eldest son had a cut in his leg and was taken to the hospital. He spoke to the investigators but Cronin did not say what he told them.
"It's a tragedy. We are all heartbroken. The community is in shock, "he said.
The online prison records indicate that Burillo was released Monday afternoon with a $ 1 million bail. In the United States, the properties indicate that the Burillo home in Marin County was purchased in 2004 for $ 10.2 million. The American records show that he and his wife, Rose, also own properties in San Diego and Sausalito.
