Michigan is reporting 1,358 new coronavirus cases and 104 deaths as of Saturday, January 30, although the majority of deaths are due to a review of death certificates.
The published data shows a continuing downward trend in new cases.
Of Saturday’s death tally, all but 11 cases were late additions found during a routine review of death certificates. As such, they haven’t necessarily happened in the past 24 hours.
The state has now recorded 559,241 cases since the start of the pandemic in March, as well as 14,601 deaths.
Along with the decline in daily cases, the percentage of positive cases versus tests administered also continues to improve.
Saturday’s data shows the positivity rate at 4.4%, based on 41,497 tests in total. The rate has been below 5 percent for the past three days.
Earlier in the pandemic, health officials set a benchmark of 3% “postivity” as an indicator to show the spread of the coronavirus was under control.
The number of people in Michigan hospitals with COVID-19 also continues to decline. The latest data shows 1,447 people hospitalized with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, including 364 in intensive care units.
About a week ago, there were 1,843 coronavirus patients in total. Two weeks ago there were 2,222 patients.
The state releases data on coronavirus recoveries once a week.
Friday, January 29, the total recoveries were 481,801 people. A recovery is considered a person who is still alive 30 days after the onset of symptoms of COVID-19.
