A total of 7,897 students and staff have been infected with the coronavirus in school-related outbreaks, almost identical to the number reported last week, according to data released Monday, November 30 by the Department of Health and Human Services. Michigan social.
The new figures come two weeks after the MDHHS ordered Michigan high schools and colleges to switch to online courses for three weeks, starting Nov. 18.
Many K-8 schools have also moved online, although elementary and middle schools can still conduct in-person learning if the local district allows.
Although the overall numbers increased slightly, almost all involved cumulative totals from ongoing outbreaks.
There were 33 K-12 schools and two colleges that reported new outbreaks to their local health departments last week. New Kindergarten to Grade 12 outbreaks involved 85 staff and students, and new college outbreaks involved 13 people.
Meanwhile, 185 kindergarten to grade 12 schools had 1,195 staff and students infected in ongoing outbreaks and 6,604 infected in ongoing outbreaks associated with university communities. These two factors reflect the total number of infected over the duration of the outbreaks, except in Washtenaw County where only cases reported within the past 28 days are included.
Outbreak data for K-12 schools only includes cases in which the student or staff were infected in school or in a school-related function. Those who caught the virus outside of school are not included. The number for university communities reflects off-campus activities.

Here are the top 10 counties in K-12 school-related outbreaks:
- Kent, 366 infections in 24 schools;
- Macomb, 100 infections in 31 schools;
- Wayne, 81 infections in eight schools;
- Marquette, 80 infections in 14 schools;
- Ottawa, 78 infections in 16 schools;
- Lapeer, 70 infections in nine schools;
- Delta, 64 infections in five schools;
- Genesee, 30 infections in 10 schools;
- Washtenaw, 29 infections in six schools;
- Oakland, 26 infections in six schools.
A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a location and time link indicating shared exposure outside of a household.
Ongoing outbreaks include clusters that were identified earlier but have had at least one additional case in the past 28 days.
