Delhi-based Nikita Pal has tested positive along with her 5-month-old son and several other family members. The 29-year-old shares her COVID journey

This year started on an incredible note when I became a mother in February, but soon motherhood turned out to be the one where I lived in constant fear of COVID.

On August 16, my father was randomly tested in his office where he learned that few of his colleagues tested positive, but he tested negative in a rapid test that day. Still, to be on the safe side, we did his RT PCR and I wasn’t very surprised when his report turned positive. From the moment he got home he was quarantined in his room and we all had to wait.

As his symptoms were a mild cough with fever, the doctor advised us to admit him as he has high blood pressure and is also in critical age. Soon after, we started calling because the whole family was scared and around 10:00 p.m. on August 17th an ambulance came and took my father away.

That same night, around midnight, I went to the bathroom and suddenly felt very weak. It became a chore for me to get back from the toilet to my bed as I found myself crawling and realizing that I also needed to get tested the next morning. I had a fever but prayed for it to be something other than COVID for my son who was only 5 months old and was only breastfeeding. But on August 19, I received my report. I tested positive and my first reaction was a lot of crying, but once that was done a series of tests began in our house.

My son who was 5 months old with my grandmother, my aunt, 2 sisters and my husband, we all tested positive within the next week and then we started the real fight.

Since my whole family tested positive, three of our members were admitted to the hospital and we were all trying to manage the house with our COVID was a huge task for us.

On the first day of COVID I had a very high fever with episodes of vomiting and with that I had to be extra careful while feeding my child. The next day I still had a fever, but that day I had a severe headache that will not go away with the pain relievers and I constantly felt very weak. On the third day I started to feel a little better with a fever but my son still had mild symptoms like cough, then the same night I started to have shortness of breath but the doctors told us that so many that your saturation was 95 and above, you need not worry so soon. I realized it was anxiety since COVID was so unpredictable. I was living in fear everyday and with my taste and smell gone it made me even more anxious but on the 6th day everything seemed to be a little better my son had no symptoms and we were all recovering alone. pace.

But I didn’t realize post COVID was a condition as well, so after 14 days I felt fine, but up to a month I had severe weakness and found that doing basic chores like taking caring for my child was exhausting. But it took our family almost a month and a half to recover and become negative and my grandmother and Bua have spent about 25 days in the hospital since they had pneumonia from COVID.

So after about a month and a half we were all united under one roof but thanks to the technology we were all digitally connected specially with my chachu and chachi in Mumbai who were supporting us constantly.

That said, all of my family have responded differently to COVID and it is by far one of the most unpredictable illnesses I have encountered.
