Mysterious meteor ‘explosion’ shakes upstate New York

A mysterious “explosion” rocked vast swathes of upstate New York on Wednesday, rocking homes, shaking windows – and confusing many people.

Residents of central New York City called 911 from noon to report hearing – and feeling – the great boom.

“I just felt an explosion that rocked our whole house in Syracuse. Hope everyone is safe, ”former Congress candidate Roger Misso written on twitter.

Someone else asked: “Everyone else in Syracuse just hears a big boom and feels their house shaking…”

“Welp. Who took over from the aliens in December? #syracuse #boom, ”one user joked.

Tremors were felt from Onondaga County to Oswego County 40 miles away and beyond in Madison and Oneida counties, Syracuse.com reported.

As it turns out, the rumble was likely caused by a meteor ripping through Earth’s atmosphere, said Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society.

Witnesses in the Empire State – and in Maryland and even Canada – have reported seeing a fireball shoot into the sky, Lunsford said.

Video taken by camera atop Toronto’s CN Tower showed flash of light over Niagara, science writer Scott Sutherland shared on twitter.

Indeed, numerous social media have stated that they suspect the massive quake was caused by a sound boom.

“It was so loud and rocked my whole house, after checking if there was a tree on my roof my next thought was #meteorite,” a person wrote.

Lunsford said it was rare to be able to spot meteors in daylight, adding that most space rocks burned when they were higher in the atmosphere.

It was not clear whether the alleged space rock from Wednesday had made an impact.

“It must be a big deal,” Lunsford said.
