Many parts of the world celebrated Black Friday on November 27, marking the start of the holiday season in the west and the countdown to Christmas festivities.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) also had its fair share of celebration, but its focus wasn’t shopping, but one of the most fascinating objects in space, the black hole. Calling it Black Hole Friday, members of the US space agency gave a reminder about the black hole.
Taking to their official Instagram account, NASA posted a jaw-dropping photo of the black hole and shared some funda on one of space’s biggest mysteries.
The long post said that a black hole is “an astronomical object with such a strong gravitational pull that nothing, not even light, can escape it.” He went on to say that its surface is a one-way street as matter and radiation fall into a black hole but can never escape it.
“The surface of a black hole, called the event horizon, defines the limit where the speed required to escape [is more than] the speed of light, which is the speed limit of the cosmos. Matter and radiation come in, but they can’t go out, ”added the caption.
The post also stated that the image depicted is not real, but artist Sophia Dagnello’s conceptual view of a tidal disturbance event.
Explaining the event, legend says it happens when a star passes “fatally near a supermassive black hole”, which then reacts by “launching a jet spanning hundreds of thousands of light years into space.
Conversely, Black Friday is celebrated primarily in the United States and other Western countries on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day, which falls on a Thursday. Black Friday is thus observed on the fourth Thursday of November.
People start their Christmas shopping and all the portals and vendors have sales. Popularly, the day after Thanksgiving has been considered the start of the Christmas shopping season in the United States since 1952.
