NASA's independent verification and validation center in Fairmont, West Virginia, has a new name. It's now Katherine Johnson's independent verification and validation facility, in honor of the "hidden figure" portrayed by actress Taraji P. Henson in the film Hidden figures.
The 2016 film paid tribute to the influential women of color who contributed to Pioneering space travel to NASA during the 60s.
Katherine Johnson was a brilliant mathematician who worked as a "computer" – not a machine as we know it today, but a person who calculates.
One of his greatest contributions to space exploration included make essential calculations this helped to synchronize Lunar Lander from the Apollo project with the command and service module in lunar orbit.
She has also worked on the Space Shuttle and Earth Resources satellite.

NASA IV & V ensures the security and success of software in NASA's most prestigious missions.
"It is an honor that the main NASA IV & V facility is now named Katherine Johnson," said NASA IV & V program director Gregory Blaney in a statement. "It's a way for us to recognize Katherine's career and contributions not only during Black History Month, but every day, every year."
After working for NASA and the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics for more than three decades, Johnson retired in 1986.
In 2015, when Johnson was 97 years old, President Obama attributed his greatest civil honor in America, the presidential medal of freedom.
