New data from the CDC shows more than half of COVID-19 transmissions come from people who don’t even know they have it.
A new model shows that 59% of all transfers come from asymptomatic carriers. This includes 35% of pre-symptomatic people and 24% who have never developed symptoms.
“It’s really a signal that someone’s immune system hasn’t responded to the virus entering the body yet, it’s a possibility,” says Dr. Alexa Mieses Malchuk of UNC. “The person who was tested may not have developed symptoms yet, the other possibility is that the person’s immune system reacts a little differently to the virus and may never develop symptoms.
Experts tell us that asymptomatic spread is one of the biggest challenges when trying to slow the spread.
Duke’s infectious disease expert Dr Cameron Wolfe says the data reminds us that we must all follow the advice of the medical community.
“This is the reason that masks and distancing are so important,” Wolfe said. “You cannot rely on your own symptoms to make your decisions.”
Wolfe emphasized the importance of sticking to what works, washing your hands, wearing a mask, and keeping your distance. He also recalled that there were no shortcuts to overcome this.
“You can’t test your way out of this problem,” Wolfe said. “We are all tired. Heck, no one is immune from this, but we have to keep pushing that line and this asymptomatic data really proves that point. We must do better. “
