New Fayette COVID cases down slightly

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The number of new COVID cases in Fayette County has fallen Friday, fueling hopes that the two-month surge could at least plateau.

According to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department’s morning report on Monday, the county confirmed 186 cases on Friday, lowering the county’s seven-day moving average to 183 from 184 the day before and more than 200 earlier during the week.

The county’s total number of cases has risen to 47,380 since March 2020.

The county has lost 363 residents due to COVID-related causes.

Free COVID-19 vaccines are available by appointment same day every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at our public health clinic at 650 Newtown Pike. Call 859-288-2483 to schedule your appointment. The clinic offers Moderna and Janssen vaccines for those 18 and over and the Pfizer vaccine for those 12 and over.

Being fully vaccinated makes people less likely to catch COVID-19, and if they do eventually get it, it makes them much less likely to have severe symptoms requiring hospitalization.

Both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations can help slow the epidemic by:

• Wearing a face cover in crowded public spaces

• Avoid close contact with sick people, especially those with symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, body aches / pains, loss of taste / smell, nausea, etc.);

• Cover coughs and sneezes;

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth;

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Those who are immunocompromised and received a second dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine at least four weeks ago are eligible for a third dose. Call 859-288-2483 to make an appointment the same day, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Learn more about http://www.lfchd.org/3rd-dose/

While there is still a chance that a fully vaccinated person could contract COVID-19, the symptoms will likely be less severe and the need for hospitalization is much smaller. As of February 2021, approximately 88% of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Lexington have been in people who have not been vaccinated or have not been fully vaccinated.
