FREDERICKSBURG, Virginia – The last of Amtrak’s 50th anniversary heritage paint locomotives are now in service.

P42DC # 160 carries the “Phase III” pattern – commonly referred to as “Pepsi Can” – which was unique to the passenger carrier’s P32-8BWH locomotives when it was delivered in 1991. It was pictured on Saturday morning; Photographer Nathan Richters said he understood the locomotive was only making its third turnover since it was repainted.

Locomotive completes debut of six anniversary programs announced earlier this year [see “Behind Amtrak’s new locomotive designs,” Trains News Wire, March 18, 2021]. There remains to come the livery “Phase VII” not yet unveiled which will be applied to most of the 75 locomotives ordered for the Siemens ALC-42 chargers.
