FRIDAY, July 6, 2018 (HealthDay News) – The combination of genetics and exposure to organic solvents in paints and varnishes Increases the risk of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), according to a study published online July 3 in Neurology .
Anna Karin Hedstrom, MD, Ph.D., Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and her colleagues studied the influence of exposure to organic solvents on the risk of MS, as well as a potential interaction between organic solvents and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes at risk of MS among 2,042 incident MS cases and 2,947 controls.
The researchers found that, overall, increased the risk of MS (odds ratio, 1.5). An interaction between organic solvents, carriage of HLA-DRB1 * 15 and the absence of HLA-A * 02 has been observed in patients who have never and never smoked (similar to the previous gene-environment interaction mentioned involving the same HLA genes of MS risk and exposure to smoke).
"The mechanism linking both smoking and exposure to organic solvents at the risk of MS may involve inflammation of the lungs with a pro-inflammatory profile," the authors write. "Their interaction with the HLA genes of MS risk argues for an action of these environmental factors on adaptive immunity, perhaps by the activation of autoagressive cells residing in the lungs subsequently attacking the central nervous system. "
