Two people were killed and 12 others injured, one seriously, by a gunman who opened fire.
One of the victims was a young woman, while the person seriously injured in the attack perpetrated in the Greektown neighborhood of Toronto, was an eight or nine year old girl.
The suspect, 29, had "an exchange of gunfire" with police officers before he was found dead nearby, the police said.
The reason for the shooting is not clear. The police did not identify the suspect.
The attack broke out Sunday night. In a video clip shared by Canadian media, a white man wearing a dark hat and dark clothes wearing a shoulder bag can be seen stopping on a sidewalk and firing a gun before firing.
Toronto Mayor John Tory condemned the "despicable" attack against "people who innocently enjoy a Sunday night".
What happened?
Emergency services were called just after 22:00 (02:00 GMT Monday). The site of the attack is a piazza with a fountain popular with locals and busy at the time, writes the Toronto Globe and Mail.
A number of people were reportedly injured in a coffee shop called Demetres, while others were hit in the street.
The death of a victim was reported shortly after the attack, with the second death announced Monday morning.
According to the police, the gunman was found on Bowden Street, a short distance from the cafe. "An exchange of gunfire" then took place, before the man ran away again.
He was found dead on Danforth Avenue.
Andrew Mantzios had been drinking coffee with friends near the fountain. "He had that horrible expression on his face," Mantzios was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
