United States and Allies Launch Air Warfare Exercises Air Forces and Navy airmen and participants from 16 nations engage in simulated fights over the Northern Territory of Australia. "Pitch Black is the largest and most important international air defense exercise of the Royal Australian Air Force with several regional, coalition and allied air forces," said Air Vice Marshal Steven Roberton, commander of the RAAF.
The exercises, which take place every two years, will be conducted on bases in Darwin and Tindal for three weeks and will focus on offensive and defensive air operations, according to a RAAF website
. The staff is involved, including participants from Australia, Canada, France, Indonesia, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Sweden and, for the first time in 1965, a press release The US Air Force said the launch of Pitch Black was only an Australian exercise. Singapore was invited in 1990 and the exercise grew to include other Australian friends and allies. It is scheduled to end on August 17.
