The lagoon of Aitutaki surrounds 15 islets.

Q. My family is returning to Rarotonga for the first time in a few years. Are there new hotels or attractions that we should know about? We would like to stay on one of the other islands for some of the time.

A. A mid-winter escape to the islands is always a good idea!

Edgewater Resort may not be new in itself, but it is extremely popular with Kiwis and a great place for a three-and-a-half-star experience. It's a great family resort, offering facilities for all ages. Located on an absolute beachfront on a beautiful lagoon, there is plenty of snorkeling and kayaking to entertain the active tykes. There is also the Coconut Kids Club, which is open to children from 4 to 12 years old.

I also recommend Pacific Resort Rarotonga: a magnificent four-star hotel on Muri Lagoon with a range of water activities for all ages, as well as a kids' club and daily activities for all tastes. The resort is in the center of Muri, and therefore close to the night markets, local restaurants and cafes, all of which are within walking distance.

As for exploring the other Cook Islands, I encourage you to book one of the daily cruises that visit some of the smallest incredibly pristine islets (known as motu ). You could spend a whole day on the water with Captain Tama's Lagoon Cruises. Sailing on a small island, you'll see hundreds of reef fish. Swim with them if you like! And there is also a barbecue. Or you can book a tour with Bishop's Cruises. These guys are accessing the east side of Aitutaki Lagoon, visiting the famous Heaven Sand Bar (the name indicates its beauty) as well as the amazing Onefoot Island. Honestly, it's not better than that.
